On more than one occasion protein bars have saved me from the temptation of fast-food. I carry a bar or two with me in my purse, backpack, car, anywhere where I might suddenly find myself starving and in need of an extra hour or two to see me through until I can get myself a real meal.
When I look at the nutrition facts on most bars I end up putting them back on the shelf. So many seem to be flavored for the sweet tooth of Willy Wonka himself. I’d do better just downing a regular candy bar. They’re basically the same thing with maybe a scoop of protein powder thrown in for good measure. But adding a health ingredient as an afterthought is no way to nourish your temple.
So, when I received Rokit Fuel’s “Not for Wussies” Booster Bars I was thrilled to find them packed with 14 whole foods, bee pollen, omegas, and functional herbs that not only fed my stomach but my overall health and would slowly burn off while I went on with my day.
The ingredient list hosts only items which I can identify and pronounce. No preservatives, nothing artificial, and tasty to boot!
Thoughtfully catering to discerning taste buds Rokit Fuel offers 2 different “formulas” which come either coated in a delicious dark chocolate that melts in your mouth (versus the chocolate wax that some bars are coated in) and blends beautifully with the bar without overpowering the other flavors. Or, for the non-chocoholics amongst us, both formulas can be had sans chocolate. These neudie-patooties are the perfect take-along summer bar that won’t melt (and only get better) when left to “warm up” in the car, backpack or pocket
The Bars
Rokit Fuel booster bar: Formula One
Ingredients: Figs, dates, organic agave nectar, coconut, barley, oat groats, wheat, sunflower, seeds, raisins, flax seeds, pecans, chia seeds, sesame seeds, bee pollen, maca root, gotu kola, sea salt.
Although I adore dates, and they are a perfect sweetener and binder, I love figs even more. The reason why is because they aren’t as sweet as dates, and their little seeds pack a good punch of fiber. I never thought to use figs as a base in a food bar, but that’s just what Rokit Fuel did, and I LOVE it!
Sporting 210 calories and 15 grams of sugar, I found these bars to be very filling and not too sweet. The fig seeds combined with the chia seeds left a satisfying little crunch that wasn’t over-powering. I love that this bar is totally portable and won’t turn into a mess when one of my kids leaves it sitting on the car seat in the sun and then sits on it (still in package, thankfully). I got a good two hours out of this bar when I was out biking one afternoon. It got me through my ride and home without crashing (blood sugar, or bike!).
Rokit Fuel booster bar: Straight Up Peanut
INGREDIENTS: Figs, dates, peanuts, organic agave nectar, coconut, sunflower seeds, raisins, barley, oat groats, wheat, chia seeds, flax seeds, sesame seeds, bee pollen, maca root, gotu kola, sea salt.
This bar had a fabulous flavor. In my world, it’s hard to go wrong with anything that includes peanuts, coconut, figs and dates. My kids, who like nuts, but not “in things” gave this bar a thumbs up because it had a peanut flavor without huge nuts messing with the entire textural balance of the bar. Straight Up Peanut, was straight up delicious!
Straight up Peanut contains 240 calories, 14 grams of fat, and only 13 grams of sugar. Now, some of you are going to freak out at the calorie and fat content. I want you to know that I used to be with you on this but I’m not longer a prisoner to the calorie and fat content. That’s because when the fat comes from high quality “healthy” fat (like nuts, coconut, avocado, grass fed meats) it’s actually very good for you, keeps you feeling full longer, and helps your blood sugar to stay constant and level (versus spiking the blood sugar which is when insulin has to come out and do the happy dance to get the whole engine back in balance again). Also, you’re getting 6 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein so this is a true “food” bar. You’re going to love the taste and feel good after eating it!
Back to the chocolate!
I love chocolate so anytime I have the option to coat something in chocolate I’m there. Both of these bars, as I said before, have the option of coming coated in a lovely dark chocolate, and let me tell you it’s really delicious. I won’t go into both bars again when coated in chocolate, instead let me just put it this way: If I had a Snickers bar (30 grams of sugar) and a Rokit Fuel Straight Up Peanut in Chocolate bar (19 grams of naturally occurring fructose from the dates and figs along with agave nectar) next to each other and I had to choose one on taste alone, I’d go with the Rokit Fuel bar without blinking an eye. It was that good!
Dairy free, vegan and Kosher, Rokit Fuel bars are a fantastic choice for cyclists, runners, hikers, or anyone that needs a delicious yet dependable bar.
