What is the best way to clean one's toilet bowl?

I used to clean houses and always wore gloves and reached inside the toilet and scrubbed it with a sponge. Nowadays I have a toilet brush and swish frequently. However, I don’t think it works nearly as well as getting in there with a sponge and really wiping it totally clean. If you swish every few days and then wipe out monthly you'll be good to go.
There are different ideas out there for toilet bowl cleaners such as liquid dish soap and baking soda, but I find that a little elbow grease does the best job.
*Keep a separate sponge especially for the toilet.
